I couldn’t say for certain (since I’m also British so we don’t need visas), but I don’t recall any part of the process asking about our nationality. I think the most important thing we needed to prove was our address. So, as long as you have a permanent French address you can use (even if it’s a friend’s house with you bringing in a letter from the homeowner to say you’re staying there with the homeowner’s proof of address) that should do.

Hi there, I came across your great blog when researching about buying a car in France. We are Australians coming across to France in 2012 on a 12 month visitor’s visa. Are we eligible to buy a car on that visa or do we need a more ‘substantial’ visa? Any comments would be appreciated

I wouldn’t know for sure, but I know that most companies (big or small) would be wary of how well your conversational skills are. If you visit the store in person and prove to them you could converse well enough, I’m sure that would help immensely. That also tends to be a good tactic for most retail stores worldwide too. Would you know if it is difficult to get a job at a bakery or clothing store in France (with conversational language skills)? I have heard about how difficult it is to find a job in a large company or organization but have not heard how difficult it is to find a simpler job…

Hi,

I guess the situation is different in big towns as I also think that France isn’t so backwards even compared with the US. What is true is that France was late, due to the existence in France of the Minitel some years ago and I was really upset about this in those days, but it has changed very fast thanks to the competition between ISPs. Maybe too fast, some people couldn’t follow!
Now with regards to the language, perhaps technologies like the translation tools included into the Google Chrome browser can help. I can’t tell cause my English is too good and I rarely use them (maybe for German occasionally).
Finally, I agree that city websites are usually poor. But generally speaking I’d say that the web quality is so variable. Good sites are quite rare. Like good books, good movies, etc!

Yes it is different in Paris (I’m in SW too).

Otherwise, I don’t agree with teacing use of Google Translate, it’s pretty bad for the real beginners and will confuse them, in order to use GT you already need some english skill, and must understand GT is far from perfection.
A good alternative i recently found is Linguee. http://www.linguee.fr/

i really want to master a foreign language and at the moment i will be looking at french but it appears that its as much a putting time in thing as being down to how hard the language is
